What are form B keys?

Industry standards for DIN 6885 B keys a.k.a. type B keys

The form B key is a rectangular parallel key with two straight ends. It can be found installed on gears, pulleys or shafts in heavy-duty industries such as the automotive and rail sectors. This key's ends, as well as its finish, ensure that force is transmitted perfectly and over a long period of time.

6885 B keys are usually made of C45 steel. C45 steel is a non-alloy steel with good mechanical strength. It can be quenched and put through surface treatment in order to increase its hardness and wear resistance.

List of the surface treatment processes we can provide:

  • Phosphatising
  • Chromating
  • Galvanising
  • Case-hardening
  • Nitriding
  • Carbonitriding
  • Nitrocarburising

Most of our DIN 6885 A standard parallel keys allow for a H9 fit on the shaft (keyway), making for a good fit without unnecessary clearance.

Manufacturing process for form B keys

  • Cold-drawing, rolling and shot blasting: cold forming the steel in order to achieve the raw material that will be machined to make the key.
  • Cutting the key to the desired length and shape.
  • Finishing processes: creating grooves, countersink, and other shapes to create the rectangular edges and keep the key in place.
  • Vibratory finishing: controlled abrasion to improve surface roughness and remove burrs.
  • Heat or surface treatment processes to change the mechanical properties.
  • Quality: systematic checks on the raw material, semi-finished and finished products.
  • Logistics and packaging: packaging and planning delivery.
  • Delivery: shipping to client according to the previously agreed arrangements (pallets, packages, etc.)
