What is a form AB machine key?

Standards for DIN 6885 AB keys a.k.a. form AB keys

Form AB keys are rectangular parallel keys with one straight end and one rounded end. They can be found in joints involving gear wheels, pulleys or sleeves on shafts in precision industries, such as machine tools, drive shafts or differentials in the automotive industry. This key's rounded end allows for easy insertion, especially in applications where access is limited.

DIN 6885 AB keys are usually made of C45 steel. C45 steel is a non-alloy steel with good mechanical strength. It can be quenched and put through surface treatment processes to increase its hardness and wear resistance.

List of the surface treatment processes we offer:

  • Phosphatising
  • Chromating
  • Galvanising
  • Case-hardening
  • Nitriding
  • Carbonitriding
  • Nitrocarburising

Most of our parallel keys made to DIN 6885 AB allow for a H9 fit on the shaft (keyway), ensuring a good fit without unnecessary clearance.

How to choose the right parallel key

Criteria:

  • Type of load: dynamic or static
  • Material: corrosion resistance, stresses
  • Dimensions: compatibility of key with existing components.

Don't:

  • Forget about tolerances, which range from h9 for standard models to h11 for these keys
  • Choose a material that's not suitable for your application.
