What are DIN 94 / ISO 1234 split cotter pins?

Split pins, also called cotter pins, are mechanical components mainly used to stabilise assemblies or to stop mechanical components from moving. They are compliant with DIN 94 and ISO 1234 standards, guaranteeing dimensions and tolerances that meet industrial requirements.

Characterised by their cylindrical shaft with a lengthways slot, these pins offer excellent elasticity and a firm hold. Their design means they can expand slightly once installed, allowing for strong, reliable fastening.

Advantages of DIN 94 - ISO 1234 split cotter pins

  • Securing your assemblies

The split pin serves as a mechanical lock to prevent components from accidentally coming loose. It is ideally suited to environments prone to vibrations or repeated shocks.

  • Easy to use & install

With its simple design, these split cotter pins can be manually inserted into a pre-drilled hole and locked in by spreading the ends with a tool (hammer or pliers).

  • VersatilitySplit pins are available in a wide range of dimensions for various applications in the mechanical engineering, automotive, agricultural and aeronautical sectors.

They can be used to fasten axles, bolts, rotating shafts and to hold nuts in place.

  • Available in different materials and treatments

Our split cotter pins are made from high-quality steels. We offer different finishing processes depending on the needs of each specific application environment:
  • Zinc-plated steel: For increased corrosion resistance in humid environments.
  • Stainless steel (304 or 316): Ideal for corrosive, salt-laden environments or environments exposed to humidity, e.g. maritime industry.

How can I install a DIN 94 split pin?

Tools required:

  • Pliers.
  • Hammer (optional for adjustments).

Étapes d’installation :

Install steps:

  1. Prepare the hole with a bore the same size as the pin's nominal diameter.
  2. Insert the split pin into the hole until it's perfectly aligned.
  3. Using pliers, spread out the pin's ends to secure the joint. Make sure it is steadily fastened, but not too much, to avoid mechanical overload.
  4. Make sure that the pin stays put even when under stress or vibration.

Typical applications for split pins

DIN 94 - ISO 1234 standard split pins are used in many different industries, e.g. to:

  • Secure nuts and bolts on shafts or axles.
  • Fasten rotating components in mechanical transmissions / gearboxes.
  • Prevent parts from moving in farm machinery.
  • Guarantee secure assembly in systems prone to severe vibration (e.g. engines, gearboxes).
