Everything you need to know about the heel key

What is a heel key?
This article introduces the heel key, a special type of key used in mechanical transmissions to ensure precise alignment between the gears and the shaft. They are particularly useful for transmissions that are subject to significant loads and frequent shocks, such as agricultural machines. The heel key has a rectangular shape with a widened end called a “heel”. We produce Heel keys in accordance with DIN 6887 or NFE 22178 standards, as well as according to the specific plans provided by our customers.
The manufacturing process for heel keys is relatively complex and requires advanced technical skills. Here are the main steps in the manufacture of these keys.
- Analysis of plans
- Materials
- Machining
- Thermal or surface treatments
- Tribofinishing
- Quality control
- Logistics and packaging
Analysis of plans
Our method department first undertakes the analysis of the plan of heel key to understand customer specifications and requirements in detail. This step allows us to determine the skills and abilities required to manufacture the heel key in accordance with customer expectations. Then a production range is created in our ERP system. This range lists the various operations required to manufacture the part.
Materials
The materials used to manufacture heel keys must be of high quality to ensure optimal resistance to loads and impacts. The materials commonly used for heel keys include steel and stainless steel. At Gardette we have expertise in cold rolling, drawing and heat treatment. This know-how allows us to manufacture a wide variety of standard and special steel profiles.
Machining
Heel keys are generally made from crude steel bars. We cut the material to the desired length using machines equipped with cutting tools such as saws. Then, the slope is machined either using conventional milling or using Numerical Controls to obtain precise shapes and dimensions. Machine tools need to be programmed with specific instructions to ensure maximum precision.
Thermal or surface treatments
La heel key can undergo heat or surface treatments to improve its appearance, resistance to corrosion and wear. We are committed to providing tailor-made solutions to meet these needs, using cutting-edge techniques and ensuring optimal treatment quality to ensure the satisfaction of our customers.
Tribofinishing
Once heel keys are machined and, if necessary, heat treated, they go through finishing operations to improve their appearance by removing burrs and polishing the surfaces.
Quality control
Throughout the manufacturing process of the heel key, strict quality checks are carried out to ensure compliance with customer specifications. Quality checks may include dimensional, hardness, corrosion resistance, and other tests.
Logistics and packaging
At Gardette, packaging respects standards and regulations. We are also in a position to adapt to the specific needs of our customers by offering tailor-made packaging options, such as packaging in bags, cartons or according to the customer's particular specifications.
