Everything you need to know about the half-moon key

In this article, we are going to introduce you to the Half-moon key by discussing its description, manufacture and application. Although it may seem small and insignificant, this piece plays an essential role in the transmission of movement and power between shafts and machine elements. We produce our half-moon keys in accordance with DIN 6888 or NFE 22179 standards, we are also in a position to produce custom half-moon keys according to the specific plans provided by our customers.

What is a half-moon key?

Half-moon keys, also called disc keys or woodruff, are fixing elements used in mechanical transmissions to ensure precise alignment between the shaft and the transmission element. It is a half-moon-shaped piece with a flat section and a domed section.

The shaft is provided with a special groove into which the key is inserted. The groove as well as the key have a characteristic rounded shape. The key must extend slightly beyond the groove to allow the mortise present on the transmission element to be inserted.

Their circular shape allows the load to be distributed evenly over the surface of the shaft and the transmission element, reducing the risk of damage or deformation.

How do you make a key?

  1. Rolling and drawing: The raw material, usually steel or stainless steel, is rolled and drawn to produce a half-moon or semicircular profile.
  2. Output: Once the semicircular profile is obtained, the pieces are cut using circular saws to obtain the desired width.
  3. Grinding: A grinding step is then carried out to achieve the precise width dimension required.
  4. Tribofinishing: After the milling operation, the keys may present burrs and have a rough surface. To improve the surface condition of the parts, a vibratory finishing process is used to obtain a high quality finished product.
  5. Quality control: Finally, before being used or marketed, round end keys must undergo a quality check to ensure that they meet the required specifications and standards. This may include visual inspections, dimensional measurements, and other tests to ensure that the keys comply with quality requirements.

It is important to note that the exact manufacturing steps may vary depending on the specific requirements of the customer.

When should the disc key be preferred?

The half-moon key is most often used when the shaft diameter is small and the transmission torque is low. A key with a diameter equivalent to or slightly greater than that of the shaft is then selected. We also use the Disc key when precision of alignment is desired because its half-moon shape allows for a precise adjustment that minimizes sliding and guarantees adequate alignment.

Les half-moon keys find their application in a variety of fields, including machine tools, transmission systems such as gearboxes, lifting equipment, and automotive applications.
