Tribofinishing is an essential step in the industrial manufacturing process, generally occurring after parts have been ground. This technique uses tribofinishing machines to deburr, polish, and round the sharp edges of metal parts.

The advantages of tribofinishing include:

  • The removal of burrs and residual imperfections after machining.
  • Improved appearance and polish, ideal for visible or friction-sensitive parts.
  • Preservation of part functionality through softened edges and controlled rounding.
  • Reduction in manual finishing time, resulting in significant productivity gains.

A technique that is unique in the world

At Gardette Industries, tribofinishing is based on two main technologies, chosen according to the nature of the parts and the desired level of finish:

Vibratory tribofinishing with vibratory bowls‍

  • This method involves mixing metal parts with specific abrasives in a vibratory tribofinishing bowl. The constant movement allows for uniform deburring and polishing of surfaces, ideal for small and medium series or parts with complex shapes.

Centrifugal tribofinishing with rotating bottoms

  • This technique uses the rapid rotation of parts in rotating bottoms to generate intense and precise tribofinishing polishing. It is particularly suitable for parts requiring a uniform edge radius and a quick finish on larger volumes. The choice between these technologies depends on several criteria: the size and shape of the parts, the type of material, and the expected end result.

Our experience

Centrifugal finishing with rotating drums now benefits from a new machine offering superior performance for processing metal parts:

  • Speed: While one batch of parts is being processed, another batch can be prepared and separated using a magnetic conveyor belt, significantly reducing waiting times.
  • Efficiency: Capable of processing up to 100 kg more parts than the old machine, it can handle larger volumes while ensuring a uniform finish.
  • Safety: Fully protected by guards and equipped with electronic safety features, this machine ensures safe operation for operators.

After tribofinishing, the parts have a polished surface. Production can include standard, ready-to-use parts, such as taper key with gib head. But also parts made to order, tailored to specific customer requirements.

Outstanding quality

At Gardette Industries, every stage of production is guided by strict quality standards. From the receipt of raw materials to delivery, we guarantee reliable, high-performance products that meet the highest requirements.

From raw materials to manufactured products: absolute precision

  • Receiving and verifying raw materials: each delivery is carefully analyzed. We examine certificates of authenticity, mechanical properties, dimensions, and tolerances to ensure that only compliant materials enter our process.
  • Monitoring during manufacturing: our experienced operators supervise each stage of production to immediately detect any anomalies and ensure perfect product consistency.
  • 100% final inspection: Before shipment, each part undergoes a complete inspection. Our procedures are aligned with ISO 9001 and ISO/TS 16949 standards, guaranteeing reliability, safety, and performance for our most demanding customers.

Improving the quality and durability of parts

By integrating tribofinishing into the manufacturing process, it is possible to standardize the quality of parts, whether they are simple or custom-made, and to guarantee a consistent finish even for small production runs. This process not only improves the appearance of components, but also contributes to their longevity by reducing the risk of wear and tear associated with sharp edges or surface imperfections.

Tribofinishing is the final step in the manufacturing process before quality control and packaging/shipping of parts, ensuring that components are perfectly finished and ready for use.

Practical applications of tribofinishing

Tribofinishing plays a key role in the manufacture of precision mechanical parts used in fields where reliability and surface quality are essential. This process guarantees compliant, high-performance, and durable components that meet the requirements of the most demanding sectors:

  • automotive, aerospace, defense, energy, petrochemicals, environment, and mechanical engineering.

Frequently asked questions about tribofinishing‍‍

What is the difference between tribofinishing and conventional polishing?

Tribofinishing is a collective mechanical process that allows several parts to be polished, deburred, and radiused simultaneously in a barrel or vibrating bowl, using abrasives and a vibrating or centrifugal motion. Conventional polishing, on the other hand, is often done manually or piece by piece on a belt or disc machine.

Tribofinishing therefore offers higher productivity and a more consistent finish, especially for small and medium-sized metal parts.

What are the main parameters to control in tribofinishing?

To achieve optimal results, several parameters are essential: the choice of abrasives, the speed of rotation or vibration, the cycle time, and the number of parts processed simultaneously. Precise adjustment of these elements allows for control over the level of polishing, deburring, and edge rounding.

What results can be expected after a tribofinishing operation?

After a well-adjusted tribofinishing process, the parts have a smooth, shiny, and uniform surface, without burrs or sharp edges. This treatment not only improves the aesthetic appearance but also the functional performance of the parts, in particular by reducing friction and facilitating assembly and surface treatment operations (galvanization, anodizing, etc.).
