Helicoil thread inserts and their importance in the world of mechanics

Helicoils thread inserts are an essential component for most professionals who use screw connections. Their usefulness lies in their ability to repair or reinforce already damaged or worn threads. They can be used in a variety of materials, such as metal or plastic.

During its installation into the receiving threads of the internally threaded part, the Helicoil acts directly using shear strength. During installation the Helicoil is compressed under the pull force of the screw, reinforcing and holding your assembly firmly.

Helicoil thread inserts are available in 304 stainless steel, in the form of a spring that is then inserted into a previously tapped/drilled hole to form a new internal thread.

With an external diameter greater than that of the original hole, it thus reinforces the thread. Once in place, the Helicoil threaded insert creates a new wear-resistant thread, capable of accommodating a bolt or a screw.

It is predominantly used in materials with low shear strength, such as aluminuim or aluminium/magnesium alloys.

Threaded inserts are particularly useful for:

  • Repairing damaged threads quickly and easily.
  • Strengthening internal threads in delicate materials.
  • Achieving optimal resistance to corrosion and extreme temperatures.

Available in different threads (metric, UNC, UNF, BSF), we offer Helicoil inserts in sets, with different diameter options and assortments.

Take a look at the Gardette Industries catalogue to discover a selection of standard thread inserts as well as fine threads.

How do you install a thread insert?

Fitting a Helicoil thread insert is both simple and economical, but it does require tools for installing, as well as following a few basic rules.

  • First step: pre-drilling a hole

We recommend using a high-quality standard twist drill bit for drilling. Before starting, it is recommended to chamfer at 90° and to clean the surface thoroughly, allowing for optimal preparation.

  • Second stage: tapping

To create the internal thread for the thread insert, we advise using specific taps, adapted to the system and to the thread. Thanks to the form tapping system, you get a perfectly clean thread, free of any chips.

  • Last step: mounting the thread insert

The Helicoil insert can be installed using either a manual or automatic installation tool.

Should you wish to take out your Helicoil, we also offer a tool specially made for extracting thread inserts.

To guarantee high-quality installation, be it for short, medium or long-run production, we can provide you with a wide range of manual and automatic tools dedicated to the installing Helicoil threaded inserts.

What net installation tools are reported to use?

In addition to the appropriate thread inserts, you will also need thread installation tools. For a top-quality installation and result, we recommend that you only use tools designed specifically for installing these inserts.

Among our range of tools for inserting thread inserts, two series of products are perfectly suited to the task:

To prepare the installation of your inserts, you will find countersink tools and twist drill bits.

The use of a tang break-off tool (tang break punch) can also be useful. This tool is specially designed to break the thread's tangs if necessary.

Each of our insertion tools for Helicoil inserts can be ordered individually, so all you have to do is choose the assembly tool that suits you best.

If necessary, we also offer kits carefully organised by diameter for inserting and repairing threads. If you're still quite new to thread repairs, we recommend starting with these kits.

Thanks to the thread repair kits, you can be sure that you have everything you need to repair your thread.
