Cold processing and machining of Gardette bars

The cold drawing process is a manufacturing process used in the metallurgical industry to manufacture metal bars and profiles. The main purpose of cold drawing is to reduce the dimensions of a material in order to give it a precise and well-defined shape.

To get from a raw material to a drawn steel bar, our process follows several steps:

  • First, we reduce the cross section of the raw material by making a silk (i.e. a reduction in the end of the raw material).
  • Then, we pass it through a channel, also called a matrix.
  • Finally, the stretching machine, known as a cold drawing bench, draws the material using trolleys, which makes it possible to obtain reduced dimensions with dimensional accuracy and reinforced mechanical characteristics.

How cold drawing works

Cold drawing is in fact only the last step in manufacturing Of drawn steel And bars

Cold drawing, a fascinating process:

  • Thanks to trolleys, the raw material is pulled through a narrow die,
  • It is then straightened using a succession of pebbles.
  • Then it is sheared to the desired length.

This drawing process reduces the size of the material while giving it a precise shape. But that's not all! It also improves the strength and quality of the material, thus offering optimal mechanical properties and increased strength.

Our bars and profiles range from 3 to 4 meters and we also offer cold drawing in coils.

By combining these different drawing processes, we are able to obtain solid products that are available in:

  • In square, round or flat bars, with exemplary mechanical precision.
  • Made of metal profiles without any material removal.
  • In stretched coils that offer excellent performance on small dimensions.

Our cold rolling, drawing, and heat treatment equipment makes it possible to manufacture a wide variety of standard profiles (flat, square, hexagonal) and special profiles to order in various steel grades:

  • Carbon steels (C22, C45...)
  • Low alloy steels (42CrMo4, 16NiCr6...)
  • Tool steels (90Mnv8, 100Cr6...)
  • Stainless steel (304, 304L, 316Ti...)

What is cold rolling?

Cold rolling is a manufacturing process by deformation of the raw material, often associated with cold drawing. This deformation is made possible by continuous compression when passing between two counter-rotating cylinders (rotating in opposite directions to each other) called “rolling mill”.

The metal is compressed and crushed, which increases the elasticity and hardness characteristics of the metal.

It is during cold rolling that the metal sees its mechanical characteristics change.

The cold rolling process makes it possible to expand the elastic deformation zone, which makes it possible to increase the elastic limit, without altering the breaking strength of the material.

Cold rolling is mainly used for square sections such as key steels. It makes it possible to transform a bar into a metal coil with a particularly thin thickness.
