Introduction to the Intervis® self-tapping insert

In soft and medium-hard materials, such as light alloys, plastics, and compressed woods, your threads can easily become worn by repeated stresses or excessive, overly-frequent tightening of screws, which can end up ripping out the threads, making them unusable.

To improve the strength and hold of your assemblies, we have designed an innovative self-tapping thread insert: the Intervis® insert.

Our company is proud to be behind the Intervis® brand, a threaded slotted insert designed to reinforce solidity in assemblies while reducing install time.

This self-tapping thread insert acts as a tap, meaning you can screw it directly into a smooth hole without any need for pre-tapping since the self-tapping insert forms its own thread in the material. This makes for sturdy, secure fastening.

We recommend using Intervis self-tapping inserts in aluminium, as their surface treatment eliminates the risk of corrosion between the two materials, making them suitable for humid conditions.

Intervis self-tapping inserts offer several advantages:

  • Perfect fit without the need for pre-drilling
  • No clearance between the spacer and the part
  • Very high holding power
  • More resistant to abrasion
  • Safer to use

At Gardette Industries, we offer various ranges of Intervis self-tapping inserts made of various materials such as rude steel (SCTA), chromium VI-free case-hardened zinc-plated steel (SCT), brass and stainless steel.

This diversity of materials allows our self-tapping threaded inserts to be fitted into many different materials such as:

  • Aluminium & aluminium alloys
  • Brass, bronze, cast iron
  • Magnesium alloys
  • Duroplast & thermoplastics

Essentially, we offer almost all materials, including ferrous and non-ferrous metals with low shear strength.

Which Intervis self-tapping threaded insert should I choose?

Intervis threaded inserts all have slots on their sides. When inserted into a hole, they create their own threads (hence the term "self-tapping").

This allows for secure and durable anchoring in the material. The Intervis threaded insert's external thread allows it to be permanently fixed into the work piece, giving greater shock-load absorbency and vibration resistance to your assembly.

Our Intervis threaded Inserts are available in three different surface treatments:

  • Intervis self-tapping insert - galvanised steel, for very high resistance to major assembly stresses and good corrosion resistance.
  • Intervis self-tapping insert - stainless steel (1.4105 and 1.4305 stainless steel), for installations that are exposed to the elements.
  • Intervis self-tapping insert - brass, for assemblies that require good conductivity.

In turn, these are available in three different models:

Advantages of Intervis self-tapping threaded inserts

  1. Thread engagement: At 30% to 40% engagement, Intervis threaded inserts offer almost maximum pull-out resistance, especially in light alloy components.
  2. Pull-out resistance: Intervis threaded inserts are very sturdy, with pull-out resistance higher than the yield strength of an 8.8 screw in light metal.
  3. Reduced weight & space: Intervis threaded inserts can significantly reduce weight and space, allowing for reduced screw dimensions, which in turn saves material, space, and weight while still remaining highly effective.

Self-tapping insert - Intervis

Intervis® threaded inserts can be made of steel, brass or stainless steel and have a standard internal thread and appropriate external thread. It also has a truncation and a slit with sharp edges.

Advantages:

  • Eliminates the need for pre-tapping
  • Steady hold; no clearance between the Intervis® threaded insert and the part receiving it
  • Safer to use: very high holding power
  • No wear and tear from tapping
