Gardette Group: The strength of a fully integrated industrial group with a century of history

Founded in 1922 in Villefranche-sur-Saône, the Gardette Group has successfully transformed its historic key-making workshop into a major European player in the field of mechanical fastenings.

By building up, over the decades, a network of expert and highly complementary entities—Gardette, LGC, the Villars drawing plant, Giraud & Ray, Mecanizados Mein, and its Marine division—the group now controls its entire manufacturing cycle.

An analysis of a unique integrated model where the combination of specialist expertise guarantees security of supply and technical excellence for our customers.

A century of heritage: the foundations of a French flagship

To understand the strength of the Gardette Group today, it is worth taking a brief look back at its origins:

  • 1922-1926 - American inspiration and French roots: After being wounded during the Great War, Joanny Gardette travelled to the United States to study industrial organisation methods. Upon his return, he founded his company on 24 August 1922 and established operations in Villefranche-sur-Saône in 1926 to begin manufacturing keys.
  • 1928-1955 - The tractor venture: Driven by a pioneering spirit, Joanny designed tracked tractors for the vineyards of the Beaujolais region and registered the ‘Stainless’ engine brand (nearly 1,500 units produced).
  • 1960-1973 - Expansion and the Route de Frans milestone: Under the leadership of the founder's sons, Paul and Roger, the company successfully diversified into starter ring gears (Europe Couronnes, the number two producer in Europe). In 1973, key manufacturing moved to 95 route de Frans, which would become the group's flagship site.
  • 1986 - The rise of the key-making leader: Philippe Gardette took sole control, refocused the company's activities, and elevated the business to the rank of France's leading manufacturer of keys, becoming a strategic partner for the European automotive and mechanical industry.

2004: The birth of the Group, a bet on complementarity

In the early 2000s, it became clear that to ensure long-term business viability and protect clients from market volatility, the company had to move beyond being a single-product, single-site manufacturer.

In 2004, Philippe Gardette created the P3G Group (now known under the unified name of Gardette Group).

The goal was not to accumulate acquisitions for the sake of volume, but to bring together specialized, interdependent expertise to master the entire value chain: materials, prismatic shapes, cylindrical connections, fastening, distribution, and international development.

Group overview: 6 pillars, one unified dynamic

Each entity within the Gardette Group cultivates its own specialty. Together, they form an industrial offering of rare coherence in the European market.

The growth of the Gardette Group from 1986 to the present day.

Gardette (Villefranche-sur-Saône - 69): The specialist in prismatic parts

  • Core business: As our historic heart and operational headquarters, this site designs and manufactures over a million keys per week and handles the finishing of complex prismatic parts (square, rectangular, flat, and diamond sections).
  • Technological strengths: 13 specialized milling machines, 7 CNC machining centers, 2 autonomous robotic cells, and dedicated grinding and vibratory finishing islands.
  • Value proposition: The agility of our Key Responsive Manufacturing®model, capable of handling everything from one-off custom repairs to mass production for the automotive and machine tool industries.

LGC (Avrillé - 49): High-speed grooved pin stamping

  • History within the group: Acquired in 2004, LGC is the cornerstone of our group's momentum.
  • Core business: A leading European specialist in grooved pins and threaded insert.
  • Key strengths: Monumental production capacity (1 million parts manufactured per day). LGC provides an unbeatable economic and technical solution for all permanent assemblies or those subject to high vibration.

Gardette - Villars site (42): Metallurgical independence through cold drawing

  • Its history within the group: Acquired in 2013 (formerly La Clavette Just), this site marked a major strategic turning point.
  • Its expertise: Cold drawing and rolling of custom steel and stainless steel, complemented by integrated heat treatment services.
  • Its added value: Upstream vertical integration. By producing its own calibrated raw materials, the group is insulated from global shortages. What takes 3 to 4 months to source from a competitor is drawn on-site in just a few days.

Giraud & Ray (Décines-Charpieu - 69): The distribution and technical trading hub

  • Its history within the group: Acquired in 2019 to expand our service scope.
  • Its expertise: Stockist and distributor of complementary fastening components (rivets, special screws, inserts, tooling) and a pioneer in B2B online ordering.
  • Key strengths: Giraud & Ray is the group's most responsive logistics platform, featuring our premier e-commerce site (gfix), which processes over 260 orders daily with a permanent stock of 30 000 items, ensuring delivery across France within 24 to 48 hours.

Mecanizados Mein (Eibar, Spain): Custom cylindrical expertise

  • The 2026 strategic acquisition: The group reaches a new international milestone by integrating theonly pin manufacturer in Spain.
  • Core business: Specialist in the manufacturing of custom cylindrical and tapered pins, in small to medium batches, to specific dimensions and grades.
  • Synergy: While LGC excels in high-volume production of grooved pins, Mecanizados Mein provides hyper-precision and custom cylindrical solutions. This acquisition also strengthens the group's presence in the Iberian market alongside our Barcelona-based commercial subsidiary, Spécialfix.

The Nautical Division (2025-2026): Setting sail in fastening

  • The vision: Faced with shifts in the European automotive sector, the group has successfully reinvented itself by applying its mechanical expertise to the marine industry.
  • The entities: Acquisition of online retail specialists (Isonautique, Bateau Plus) combined with the purchase of leading technical workshops in Lorient and La Rochelle (Tonnerre Gréement, La Rochelle Gréement).
  • The contribution: A targeted diversification led by the 4th generation, bridging the world of structural parts, cables, and stainless steel fittings with the group's machining capabilities.

Global reach: over 50% of the group's revenue generated from exports

While our roots in Villefranche-sur-Saône represent the group's historical foundation, conquering international markets quickly became a key driver of growth.

Today, the Gardette Group generates 50% of its revenue outside of France.

This international momentum has been built gradually:

  • European momentum with Spécialfix: The creation of the Spécialfix subsidiary and our first location in Spain (Barcelona) laid the groundwork for a structured European sales network.
  • American presence: The group has strengthened its footprint in the United States through a joint venture based in Pittsburgh, allowing us to respond directly to the needs of the North American market.
To strengthen this strategic positioning in North America, we have also expanded into Canada by appointing a local representative.
  • Expanding into Asia and South America: To support its global clients, Gardette has opened offices in Taiwan and established a strategic partnership in Brazil to serve the Mercosur region.
  • Strengthening our Iberian presence with Mecanizados Mein (2026): The acquisition of Mecanizados Mein in Eibar provides the group with a second industrial facility in Spain and consolidates our position in the European market.
